4 REASONS BOJACK HORSEMAN IS A RELATABLE CHARACTER
The face of a horse that takes 3 gallops forward and 4 gallops back
In honor of Bojack Horseman season 5, I’ve decided to do what any nerd would do and compare our lives to that of a fictional celebrity horse. If you don’t know what Bojack Horseman is, it’s a dark comedy on Netflix that chronicles the life of a 90’s sitcom star several years removed from the height of his fame. He battles personal demons, alcoholism, self-esteem issues and Mr. Peanutbutter. All five seasons are currently on Netflix, with season five having been released on September 17. So here are 4 reasons we all messes with Bojack:
-
SELF-DISCOVERY
We’ve all had a time in our life when the person we thought we had always been is no longer the person we see when we look in the mirror. For Bojack, his fame and stardom defined him for a long time, but when he finally had time to look back on the person he had been, he wasn’t who he thought he was. Throughout each season we see Bojack desperately try to create an identity of which he can be proud. The road is windy and sometimes he gets lost, but that is exactly why people can identify with this character. For those of you who can’t relate, those of us that can hate you and hope you trip and scrape your knee.
2. INSECURITIES
We all have them, and for those of you that think you don’t, SCRAPE YOUR KNEE. Bojack, like most of us, has a desire to be liked by the people around him, rather he expects to be revered because of who he believes himself to be. Come to find out, people care more about his in reality character and less about the one that made him famous.
3. SELF-DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR
It’s like you’re in a room and you see a red button, and the button says “DO NOT PUSH OR I WILL DESTROY YOUR LIFE”, so you push it with both hands. Then another button appears and says “Seriously bro, don’t push this button, you don’t want this smoke”, but you drop kick that button from the top rope. Then ANOTHER button appears and it reads “you must not be able to read fam, I’m trying to help you, last chance”, but you’re like “Screw you button, you’re not the boss of me!” then you shoot a rocket at that button. That’s exactly what Bojack does EVERY. SINGLE. SEASON.
4. HEART OF GOLD
Girls, you know that guy that’s no good, selfish, verbally abusive, self-centered, had an exorcism done at age 13 because he plucked the feathers of pigeons? Good. Do you know why you end up marrying that guy? Because every now and then he has moments where he makes you feel the most beautiful and respected you’ve ever felt and you can’t help but melt at the prospect of feeling like that every day if you stick around long enough. Bojack has moments of incredible self-awareness where he does the right thing and restores the faith of people that lost it. There’s some good in everyone, you just need to be willing to dig deep enough.
